Diplomatic friction in New York over Turkish Cypriot leader's meetings

During the United Nations General Assembly in New York in late September 2026, a diplomatic dispute emerged between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot side. The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Cyprus to the UN reportedly circulated a letter to other permanent missions and observer delegations, requesting they avoid contact with representatives of the Turkish Cypriot entity. The letter, cited by media outlets like Yeni Düzen, characterizes these individuals as representatives of a separatist entity and argues that such meetings promote separatist policies, citing UN Security Council resolutions.

Despite these efforts, Mehmet Dana, the special representative of Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, held a series of meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Dana met with UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, as well as representatives from Pakistan, Switzerland, Russia, and France. He also held talks with the Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, to discuss developments regarding the Cyprus issue. Media in the north, including the newspaper Kıbrıs, labeled the Republic of Cyprus's diplomatic maneuver as a "diplomatic scandal," alleging it was a deliberate attempt to obstruct Erhürman's international engagements.
