Stalled trilateral meeting and UN warnings on the Cyprus issue

Following the UN General Assembly in New York, efforts to facilitate a trilateral meeting between Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, mediated by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, failed to materialize. President Christodoulides had proposed the meeting, but the Turkish Cypriot side declined, citing a lack of political alignment and disputes over the scope of potential negotiations. The UN personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, expressed concerns that a window of opportunity for progress is closing due to a confrontational climate and insufficient political will.

Erhurman accused the Greek Cypriot side of attempting to dilute substantive discussions with a 19-point proposal, insisting he would only discuss the seven points previously identified by Guterres. Conversely, the Greek Cypriot government remains committed to resuming negotiations, with Christodoulides explicitly rejecting claims that the process is in a deadlock. He plans to brief the National Council on September 30 regarding his New York consultations and next steps.

Holguin intends to visit Cyprus in October and will continue her mediation efforts through the end of December. Meanwhile, the political atmosphere remains tense as both sides trade blame for the lack of progress.
