Death of 16-year-old athlete following traffic accident

Aris-Lambros Papacharalambous, a 16-year-old player for the EN THOI Lakatamias U17 football team, passed away on September 25, 2026, after a 50-day battle for his life. The young athlete had been in critical condition since the early hours of August 7, 2026, when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 27-year-old intoxicated driver while riding his electric scooter on Aglantzia Avenue in Nicosia. Following the collision, the driver fled the scene and was later arrested along with his wife, who had provided false statements to authorities regarding the identity of the person driving the car at the time of the incident.

The sports community in Cyprus, including teams such as APOEL, Omonia, and Anorthosis, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Funeral services for Aris will be held on September 29, 2026, at the Holy Church of Apostle Andrew in Platy Aglantzia. His family has requested that attendees wear white to the ceremony and has directed that donations be made to charity organizations instead of floral tributes.
