Police investigating potential match-fixing in AEL versus APOEL football match

Cypriot police have confirmed the receipt of an official complaint filed by AEL Limassol regarding the potential manipulation of their recent football match against APOEL Nicosia. Police press officer Kyriakos Theodorou stated that the report was submitted two days ago and is currently under formal assessment. While details remain confidential due to the ongoing investigation, authorities are following standard protocols which involve taking written testimonies and determining whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed with prosecution or to seek legal advice from the Attorney General’s office.

In the same context, Theodorou addressed the long-standing investigation stemming from allegations made by Stavros Papastavrou. He noted that multiple cases examined by the Ethics Committee were archived after finding no evidence of wrongdoing. However, five cases related to these broader complaints are currently pending before the court, including one case involving George Koumas. The police continue to manage these investigations within their legal framework as they assess the newly filed complaint regarding the AEL-APOEL fixture.
