Severe flooding strikes Bangkok and across Thailand

Since mid-September 2026, Thailand has faced severe flooding triggered by torrential rainfall, which has impacted 29 of the country's 77 provinces. The capital, Bangkok, was declared a disaster zone after receiving nearly 300 millimeters of rain, leading to widespread infrastructure damage and the closure of schools. According to government reports, approximately 700,000 people in the capital have been affected, with about 7,000 residents seeking refuge in over 230 temporary shelters.

The death toll across Thailand has reached 23 as of late September. While fatalities were initially concentrated in eastern provinces like Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Saraburi, recent updates confirm four deaths within Bangkok itself, along with eight in Samut Prakan and additional casualties in Ayutthaya. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has indicated that while water pumps are operating continuously, the drainage efforts may take significant time due to the high volume of water. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as extreme weather persists and residents face ongoing disruptions to daily life.
