AKEL Secretary General meets with Lebanese Ambassador in Nicosia

On September 26, 2026, the General Secretary of the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), Stefanos Stefanou, held a meeting in Nicosia with the new Ambassador of Lebanon to Cyprus, Reina Charbel. The discussion, which also included the Head of the AKEL International Relations and European Policy Department, Vera Polykarpou, focused on recent diplomatic efforts to restart Cyprus peace negotiations.

Stefanou briefed the Ambassador on the consultations conducted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his personal envoy. He emphasized that the framework for a solution must remain a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality. Stefanou insisted that the progress made since 2017 and the existing body of negotiation records must be preserved to facilitate a successful restart of the talks.

Beyond the Cyprus issue, the officials exchanged views on the volatile security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Both sides expressed significant concern regarding the instability in the region and the potential for wider humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.
