Fatal sea incidents in Pyla and Ayia Napa during the weekend

Two separate fatal incidents occurred in Cyprus coastal areas over the weekend. On Saturday, September 26, 2026, around 12:00, a 22-year-old Russian man residing in Cyprus was found unconscious among rocks near a breakwater in the Pyla tourist area. Despite receiving first aid and being transported to Larnaca General Hospital, he was pronounced dead. Authorities have identified the victim and are coordinating with the relevant embassy to notify his family.

Separately, in the afternoon of the same day, a 63-year-old British diver suffered a medical emergency while diving in the Pernera area of Ayia Napa. The man felt unwell around 15:15 and was moved to a floating platform where he received assistance from his diving instructor and lifeguards. He was rushed to Famagusta General Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he passed away. A post-mortem examination performed on Monday by forensic pathologist Nikolas Charalambous did not provide a definitive cause of death, and authorities are awaiting laboratory test results to conclude the investigation.
