Iraq halts flights from Iranian airlines following new US sanctions

Iraqi airports, including Baghdad, Najaf, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah, have suspended all flights operated by Iranian airlines as of September 2026. This measure follows a directive from the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, enacted in response to new United States sanctions that took effect on September 23. Washington has threatened to impose secondary sanctions on any international entity engaging in business with Iranian aviation companies, aiming to ground the entire Iranian fleet.

The suspension has significantly disrupted travel for patients, students, and Shia pilgrims who frequently travel between the two nations. The city of Najaf, a primary destination for religious pilgrims, has been particularly affected. In response to the humanitarian impact, the Iraqi government, led by the prime minister's office, is currently engaged in direct negotiations with U.S. officials. Baghdad is seeking a specific exemption from these measures to allow flights to resume for essential travel, including medical treatment, education, and religious pilgrimage. The outcome of these discussions remains pending.
