Ankara intensifies infrastructure development in occupied Cyprus ahead of elections

Ankara has significantly increased its presence and activity regarding infrastructure and development projects in the occupied areas of Cyprus. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening the integration of the occupied territories with Turkey while serving broader geopolitical objectives and cementing Turkish influence on the island.

The timing of these projects is closely tied to the upcoming illegal parliamentary and municipal elections scheduled for December 6, 2026. Current polls suggest that the ruling coalition, led by the National Unity Party (UBP), is experiencing a decline in support. By accelerating development, Turkey seeks to bolster the incumbent government against the challenge posed by the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), headed by Tufan Erhürman.

While Ankara acknowledges that any administration in the occupied territories faces inherent constraints, it prefers the current leadership, including figures like Ünal Üstel and Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu, due to existing channels of communication and alignment on strategic goals. The ongoing push serves both to deepen the dependency of the region on Turkey and to influence the domestic political landscape as the December election date approaches.
