Cat neutering program at central prisons delayed by funding issues

A planned initiative to neuter approximately 70 cats residing at the central prisons in Cyprus has stalled due to a lack of necessary funding. The Animal Party of Cyprus, which has coordinated the preparations with the acting prison director, the relevant ministers, and the veterinary services, announced on September 27, 2026, that the project requires €5,000 to proceed.

The party has criticized the situation as an example of excessive state bureaucracy, arguing that the relatively small sum is preventing a critical animal welfare and public health measure from being implemented. They have formally requested that the government establish a transparent mechanism to secure the funds and have called for the President of the Republic to intervene and resolve the administrative deadlock, emphasizing that the project is essential for population control and preventing uncontrolled breeding.
