Funding delay stalls cat neutering project at central prisons

The Animal Party of Cyprus reported on September 27, 2026, that a planned project to neuter approximately 70 cats residing at the central prisons has been halted due to a lack of funding. Although preparatory work has been completed in coordination with prison authorities, the environment commissioner, and veterinary services, the initiative remains frozen.

The project requires €5,000 to proceed, a sum the party describes as modest compared to the public health and animal welfare benefits it would provide. The party criticized the state for creating an administrative deadlock, arguing that this issue is a clear example of unnecessary bureaucracy hindering a necessary environmental and humanitarian action.

To break the impasse, the Animal Party has publicly called upon the President of the Republic to intervene personally. They are requesting that the administration identify a legal and transparent mechanism to release the funds immediately. The party maintains that the government must find efficient, lawful solutions to local problems rather than allowing a simple, targeted intervention to be obstructed by procedural complexity.
