Cyprus weather warning issued for strong storms and hail

The Meteorological Department of Cyprus issued a yellow weather warning effective from 21:00 on Sunday, September 27, 2026, until 06:00 on Monday, September 28. The warning was prompted by a low-pressure system affecting the region, bringing unstable weather characterized by isolated heavy thunderstorms and the possibility of hail. Rainfall intensity was forecasted to range between 35 and 50 millimetres per hour.

The weather began to shift on Sunday evening, initially impacting western and northern parts of the island before spreading to other areas. Temperatures dropped significantly, with overnight lows reaching 18°C in the interior, 20°C in coastal areas, and 11°C in the highest mountain regions. Winds varied from light to moderate, occasionally reaching 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale.

Following the warning period, authorities reported that unstable conditions were expected to persist throughout the beginning of the week. Monday's forecast included continued rain and localized thunderstorms, with temperatures gradually recovering to around 28°C in the interior and eastern coastal regions. The situation remained under monitoring by meteorological services as the unstable weather patterns continued to influence island-wide conditions.
