Yellow weather warning for storms issued for Cyprus
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology issued a yellow weather warning on September 27, 2026, valid from 9:00 PM that evening until 6:00 AM on Monday, September 28. The warning focused on isolated strong thunderstorms, with rainfall intensity estimated between 35 and 50 millimetres per hour, and the potential for hail. These conditions were expected to affect western and northern parts of the island initially, before spreading inland and to other regions throughout the night and the following day.
Low atmospheric pressure is currently affecting the island, causing unsettled weather patterns. Temperatures dropped to around 18°C inland, 20°C on the coast, and 11°C in higher mountains on the night of the warning. Meteorological officials noted that winds were expected to reach moderate to strong levels of 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale, occasionally peaking at 6 on exposed coastal areas. Preliminary data released by the Department of Meteorology indicated that total rainfall for September has already reached 180% of the monthly average.
Looking ahead, officials expect the unstable weather to persist, with a transition toward more intensive phenomena starting Wednesday, as a cold air mass approaches the eastern Mediterranean. Further rainfall and potential hail are expected through Thursday and Friday, with temperatures projected to drop by up to five degrees later in the week.
