Five men arrested following security incident at UK air base

British police have arrested five men on suspicion of terrorism and explosive-related offences following a major incident near RAF Fairford, a military airfield in southwest England currently utilized by the United States for operations against Iranian missile sites. Authorities acted after receiving reports of three suspicious vans travelling toward the base in the early hours of Sunday, prompting a large-scale emergency response including armed officers, bomb disposal experts, and the evacuation of nearby residents in the Whelford area.

Counter-terrorism detectives have established a 400-metre security cordon around the site to allow experts to examine the vehicles. While police confirmed that five individuals remain in custody and believe the situation is now contained, the investigation into the circumstances of the attempted approach is ongoing. Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, stated that officials are working closely with partners to assess the threat.

This security alert follows persistent tensions in the region, as RAF Fairford has been authorized by the British government to conduct strikes against Iranian assets involved in attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had previously warned in July that any military installation supporting these operations would be considered a legitimate target, adding significant context to the heightened state of security surrounding the facility.
