Escalation of Russian aerial attacks across Ukraine
Between September 27 and September 30, 2026, Ukraine faced a series of intensified Russian missile and drone attacks. On September 27, at least eight people were reported dead in various strikes across Sumy, Kyiv, Bucha, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa. In Kharkiv, a Russian guided aerial bomb struck an apartment building in the Saltivsky district, injuring 22 people, including eight children.
On September 28, a drone hit the historic National Academy of Sciences building in central Kyiv, resulting in one death and multiple injuries, including high-ranking academic Volodymyr Horbulin. Russian forces subsequently launched combined attacks involving ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, targeting data centers and energy infrastructure.
By early morning on September 29 and 30, Kyiv remained under constant alarm as air defense systems were activated to intercept incoming projectiles. Authorities report ongoing fires and residential damage across the capital and Odesa. President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed for urgent military aid, specifically Patriot interceptor missiles, to reinforce Ukraine's air defense capabilities amidst the sustained offensive.
