Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic resigns to pursue prime minister role

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic officially resigned from his office on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The move, which comes near the end of his second and final constitutionally permitted term, is a strategic pivot aimed at enabling him to run for the position of Prime Minister, provided his political party, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), secures a victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25.

Following his formal resignation, Ana Brnabic, the former Prime Minister and parliamentary leader, has assumed the role of acting President. Under the Serbian Constitution, presidential elections must be held within 90 days of a vacancy. Vucic has indicated that the first round of the presidential vote will likely take place in late December, meaning Serbian citizens will head to the polls twice within the coming months for parliamentary and presidential elections respectively.

The transition of power was solidified on the morning of September 28 at the presidential palace, where Vucic handed over state seals and documents to Brnabic. Despite the resignation, Vucic remains a central figure in the ruling SNS party, looking to consolidate his political influence by shifting from the presidency to the executive leadership of the government.
