Department of Forests issues guidelines for responsible wild mushroom harvesting

With the start of the wild mushroom harvesting season, the Department of Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has issued official guidelines to ensure the preservation of the forest ecosystem. Authorities emphasize that responsible practices are essential to protecting natural habitats for future generations.

Key regulations include a strict prohibition on the use of rakes, combs, or other tools, as these implements disrupt the soil and can damage fungi; such actions are violations of the Forests Law. Harvesters are instructed not to dig or destroy the ground. If necessary, the leaf litter layer, which is crucial for retaining soil moisture and supporting fungal growth, should be removed gently and replaced immediately after picking. Furthermore, individuals are advised to collect only mushrooms they can positively identify as edible and to prioritize mature specimens that have completed their natural reproductive cycle.
