Greek actress and dancer Eleni Prokopiou dies at 87

Eleni Prokopiou, a prominent figure of the golden age of Greek cinema, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the age of 87. The news was shared by actress Melpo Kosti and journalist Nikos Nikolizas, with official tributes highlighting her career as both a performer and a skilled dancer.

Born in 1939, Prokopiou began her artistic journey at the age of six, studying dance alongside Martha Karagianni at the Loukia Sakellariou-Kotsopoulou School. She gained fame in the late 1950s as part of a renowned dance duo with Vaggelis Seilinos and performed at the Greek National Opera. Between 1960 and 1972, she appeared in 23 films, frequently choreographing her own dance sequences and playing leading roles. She was often associated with her mentor, Dimitris Ivanov, and was famously described as the 'Lady of the Court' by Finos Film.

Prokopiou chose to step away from the limelight early in her career to dedicate her life to her family. Her passing is being mourned by the Greek artistic community as the loss of an iconic talent who significantly contributed to the cultural landscape of the 1960s.
