Major Italian oil companies implement fuel price caps
Starting September 28, 2026, two major oil companies operating in Italy, Eni and Italiana Petroli, have implemented price caps on gasoline and diesel. The state-controlled firm Eni, which operates approximately 20% of the country’s service stations, set its prices at 1.99 euros per liter for gasoline and 2.19 euros for diesel, effective as of 08:00 local time. This measure is scheduled to remain in place for at least one month. The Azerbaijani-owned firm Italiana Petroli subsequently announced a similar reduction strategy to align with market adjustments, effective starting from the following day.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly expressed her gratitude toward both companies for their decisions. She emphasized that her administration remains committed to supporting Italian households and protecting their purchasing power against rising energy costs. The Italian government, which holds a 32% stake in Eni and maintains veto power over key strategic decisions, has not announced further interventions at this time, though the move signals a broader effort to stabilize fuel prices for consumers across the nation.
