Greek government denies reports of GSI cable route change

The Greek government has officially dismissed media reports suggesting a potential change in the route of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) electricity cable between Greece and Cyprus. Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou stated that the current design does not traverse areas affected by Turkey's unilaterally declared Fethiye-Kas marine park, rendering any route adjustment unnecessary. Officials emphasized that the project will proceed based on the original design finalized by the contractor, with Greece handling all necessary licensing according to international law.

Following recent shifts in the ownership structure, where the French investment group Meridiam became a majority shareholder alongside the grid operator IPTO (ADMIE), the project is entering a critical phase. Plans include the imminent resumption of seabed surveys, which will be facilitated by the issuance of official navigational warnings (NAVTEX). While tensions persist regarding territorial claims in the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece remains committed to advancing the project in cooperation with France and European institutions to secure energy interconnectivity.
