Strategic adjustments planned for Great Sea Interconnector project

Greece and France are planning a slight redesign of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) cable route to mitigate geopolitical risks in the Eastern Mediterranean. The adjustments aim to bypass areas claimed by Turkey as part of the Fethiye-Kas marine park, announced by Ankara on August 15, 2026, south of Kastellorizo. By altering the path, officials hope to prevent Turkey from citing jurisdictional authority to block subsea surveys or construction activities.

Simultaneously, Athens is considering extending its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles south and west of Crete. Recent reports suggest that unlike the previous incident in July 2024 near Kas, where an Italian ship withdrew abruptly, the upcoming operations will be supported by a French vessel. While Greek officials maintain this move does not constitute an acknowledgment of Turkish maritime claims, it is intended to stabilize the operational environment.

Authorities are currently monitoring Turkish reactions to these developments. There is significant concern regarding the potential for a heated confrontation, but the presence of French assets is intended to serve as a deterrent.
