Cyprus Bar Association calls for urgent reform of the justice system

On September 28, 2026, the Cyprus Bar Association expressed its support for the Fiscal Council's recent critical assessment regarding the chronic weaknesses and inefficiencies within the island's justice system. The Association noted that these findings are long-standing issues repeatedly highlighted to both the executive and judicial branches of the government, yet remain largely unaddressed.

The Association emphasized that a lack of political and judicial vision is hindering progress. It holds the judiciary primarily responsible for failing to implement decisive measures for systemic modernization. Furthermore, the organization noted that numerous reports and recommendations previously provided by the European Commission remain unimplemented and ignored by the authorities.

According to the Cyprus Bar Association, current problems cannot be solved through fragmented interventions. Instead, the organization advocates for a comprehensive, long-term strategic plan to modernize the operation of the judiciary. They demand that the judicial authorities act with increased determination to escape the current stagnation of the system and align with modern administrative standards.
