Cyprus Bar Association supports fiscal council critique of the judiciary

The Cyprus Bar Association has officially welcomed the findings of the Fiscal Council regarding long-standing weaknesses within the national justice system. In a series of statements released on September 28 and 29, 2026, the association emphasized that these observations were not unexpected, as they have been pointing out systemic inefficiencies to both the executive and judicial branches for several years.

The association contends that the justice system lacks the necessary vision and determination for modernization. It places the primary burden of responsibility on the judicial authority, urging it to move beyond fragmented interventions and implement a comprehensive, long-term strategic plan. The Bar Association highlighted that numerous reports and recommendations from the European Commission remain unimplemented and are essentially left "in drawers.

Beyond general systemic reforms, the association expressed specific concern regarding the current state of the primary court system. Officials underscored that without a centralized strategy involving infrastructure and technological upgrades, the sector will struggle to escape its current stagnation, demanding more assertive action from those in charge of judicial administration.
