Political rift between ELAM and AKEL intensifies over Cyprus Forum 2026

The political dispute between the political parties ELAM and AKEL has escalated in September 2026, following the decision by AKEL to withdraw from the upcoming Cyprus Forum 2026. This withdrawal came after AKEL criticized what it termed as the hysterical rhetoric of the far-right. Specifically, AKEL announced that its General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, and other party officials who had been invited would not participate in the event.

In response, ELAM released an official statement accusing AKEL of targeting the party for stating what it considers self-evident truths. ELAM questioned whether AKEL views the characterization of pseudo-municipalities as illegal occupation organs, which are not recognized by the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, as a form of far-right rhetoric. ELAM further stated that the withdrawal of the Left-wing party from the forum was expected, while accusing AKEL of maintaining anti-Hellenic rhetoric.

The conflict highlights the deep divisions regarding the recognition of administrative bodies in the occupied territories and the handling of the Cyprus problem. ELAM reaffirmed its commitment to non-recognition of what it labels as illegal institutions and officials, declaring that it will not compromise with the consequences of the occupation. As of now, the disagreement remains a focal point of public political discourse in Cyprus, with no indication of reconciliation between the two factions regarding the event.
