Military aircraft conduct flyovers in Nicosia ahead of Independence Day parade

On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, military aircraft, including two Hellenic Air Force F-16 Viper jets, conducted low-level flyovers over Nicosia at approximately 11:00 am. The maneuvers were performed as part of scheduled rehearsals for the upcoming military parade on October 1, which marks the 66th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Cyprus.

The National Guard General Staff had previously announced the rehearsals and reassured the public that there was no cause for alarm. Despite these official notices, reports indicated that the flyovers and the loud noise generated by the jets caused temporary distress among some residents in the capital. The annual parade traditionally features units from the National Guard, Greek forces stationed in Cyprus, police, and fire services.

Looking ahead, authorities have announced comprehensive traffic regulations for October 1. Multiple road closures will be implemented in the Strovolos area, specifically affecting sections of Iosif Ch. Iosif Avenue, Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue, and other surrounding streets between 06:30 and 13:00 to facilitate the parade logistics. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes through the Nicosia-Limassol highway or peripheral roads during these hours.
