Military aircraft conduct flyovers in Nicosia for independence day parade rehearsals

Military aircraft, including Greek F-16 Viper fighter jets and helicopters, conducted low-level flyovers above Nicosia on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. These flights occurred around 11:00 a.m. as part of scheduled rehearsals for the upcoming military parade celebrating the 66th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus. The National Guard General Staff (GEEF) confirmed that the activities were planned and advised the public that there was no cause for concern, despite reports of citizens being startled by the loud noises during the maneuvers.

The main military parade is scheduled for October 1, 2026, in Strovolos. Due to the event, authorities have announced significant traffic disruptions and road closures. Specifically, sections of Iosif Ch' Iosif, Spyrou Kyprianou, Athalassas, and Perikleous avenues, as well as Dimitri Bikela Street, will be closed to traffic at various times between 06:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to facilitate the parade and the movement of participating units, which include the National Guard, police, fire service, and Greek forces.
