Cypriot police investigate social media violations during 2026 parliamentary elections

Cypriot authorities have launched an investigation into social media activity related to the 2026 parliamentary elections. The Ministry of the Interior submitted data regarding 127 complaints to the Legal Service on September 1, 2026, identifying over 100 specific posts and advertisements published on the eve of or during election day that potentially violated electoral laws.

Police spokesperson Byron Byronos confirmed that authorities are currently summoning 27 individuals and page administrators for questioning and interrogation. Among those summoned is Theano Kalavana, President of OPEK, who reportedly expressed strong opposition to the investigation. The initial data was collected by the Press and Information Office before being forwarded to the Ministry of the Interior for legal review.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to record formal statements from all identified parties involved. The inquiry stems from a broader effort to address concerns over illegal campaign messaging and advertisements disseminated during the restricted election period.
