Critical blood shortages persist in Cyprus affecting medical services

Cyprus is currently experiencing a critical shortage of blood supplies, which has led to the postponement of transfusions and reduced transfusion volumes for thalassemia patients. Andri Panagiotou, head of the Ministry of Health's Blood Center, confirmed that the issue became particularly acute during the first days of September. In an effort to address the shortfall and recover stock levels, the Blood Center remained operational this past Sunday to facilitate donations from citizens on their non-working day.

According to official reports, the shortage is driven by a combination of rising overall demand and the increased complexity of surgical procedures now being performed locally. These advanced operations, which were previously conducted abroad, place a significantly higher demand on domestic blood reserves. Authorities are working to stabilize the supply chain to prevent further disruption of patient care.
