Critical blood shortages reported in Cyprus

Cyprus is currently experiencing a critical shortage of blood supplies, forcing the postponement of transfusions and leading to sub-transfusions for patients suffering from thalassemia. Andri Panayiotou, head of the Ministry of Health's Blood Center, stated that the supply deficit has been particularly pronounced since early September. The ongoing crisis is attributed to a combination of rising medical demands and the increasing performance of complex surgical procedures within Cyprus, which were previously conducted abroad and did not strain local reserves.

In response to the emergency, the Blood Center has remained open on non-working days, including Sundays, to encourage public donations. Recent reports indicate that the service is in a state of alert, with urgent calls for donors to visit stations in Engomi and Geri. The Cyprus Thalassemia Association has also highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that the lack of reserves directly impacts the health and survival of patients, including children who rely on regular transfusions. The authorities continue to urge citizens to donate blood as soon as possible to restore safety levels for medical care.
