Series of wildfires across Cyprus throughout late September 2026

Cyprus experienced several wildfires between September 28 and September 29, 2026. On Monday morning, a fire broke out near Pissouri and Aletor, burning approximately four decares of dry grass, wild vegetation, and trees. Firefighting teams, including support from the British Bases, managed to bring the fire under control by midday. Later that evening, a separate blaze occurred in Orounta, Nicosia, caused by sparks from electricity cables, resulting in the loss of one hectare of land. Other incidents included a fire in Ayios Sozomenos involving large reed beds, which required intervention from multiple volunteer groups and forestry services.

Additional fires were recorded in the Polis Chrysochous region near Latsi, where two decares of stubble were burned, and east of Kellia in Larnaca, where four decares were scorched. In total, the Fire Service responded to 19 fire-related calls within a 24-hour period, with approximately 2.9 hectares of land destroyed across the island. Authorities have launched investigations into the causes of most of these incidents, while volunteer groups like Atlas-Dias and SupportCY provided essential assistance to official forestry and fire departments during these operations.
