Audit office report reveals safety risks in school air conditioning project

The Audit Office of Cyprus, led by Auditor General Andreas Papaconstantinou, released a critical report on September 29, 2026, regarding the installation of air conditioning units in public schools. Inspections conducted on September 24 revealed that in four out of five schools incorrectly marked as completed by the Ministry of Education, fundamental work was missing. Findings included unconnected air conditioners, makeshift electrical wiring, and tampered safety boards. The Auditor General has warned of severe health and safety risks, including the potential for electrocution, and called for the immediate termination of operations for units lacking certification.

The Ministry of Education defended the project, describing it as a vital effort to cover a decades-long infrastructure deficit. Officials stated that air conditioning is fully operational in approximately 90% of lyceums and 75% of gymnasiums. The Ministry argued that the report relies on a limited sample and outdated data from the project's initial phases, asserting that safety remains their top priority. The Audit Office indicated that this report is part of a series of 20 upcoming evaluations, including investigations into the Akamas region and the Minimum Guaranteed Income, as it pushes for improved governance and state oversight.
