Cypriot government distances itself from early presidential election campaign

The Cypriot government has officially distanced itself from the early launch of the presidential election campaign following the announcement by Averof Neofytou. Deputy Government Spokesman Giannis Antoniou stated that the administration wishes to avoid involvement in internal party matters, arguing that beginning the campaign 17 months before the election is premature, especially given the ongoing challenges regarding the Cyprus problem and Turkish intransigence.

Simultaneously, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized that President Nikos Christodoulides remains committed to resuming negotiations for a resolution to the Cyprus issue. Despite efforts by the President during his recent stay in New York, a proposed joint meeting did not occur due to a negative response from Tufan Erhurman. The government stated it is ready to participate in an expanded meeting and hopes to utilize the remaining time in the current UN Secretary-General's term.

While the government acknowledges that political figures have the right to declare their candidacy, officials have expressed concerns that the early start of election discourse may detract from pressing national issues. The administration maintains a wait-and-see approach regarding potential candidate scenarios, including those involving Annita Demetriou, Averof Neofytou, and Nikos Christodoulides, focusing instead on ongoing diplomatic efforts.
