President Christodoulides addresses Cyprus problem status and domestic political developments

Following his return from the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, President Nikos Christodoulides briefed the National Council on September 30, 2026, regarding ongoing efforts to restart negotiations on the Cyprus problem. Despite reports suggesting a stalemate, President Christodoulides firmly rejected claims of a deadlock, asserting that he remains committed to finding a solution. He noted that the Greek Cypriot side has submitted 19 proposals covering methodology, substance, and confidence-building measures to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. While a trilateral meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman did not occur in New York due to Erhurman's assessment of insufficient conditions, UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected to visit Cyprus in October to continue diplomatic efforts.

Simultaneously, domestic politics have intensified following the early announcement of Averof Neophytou’s candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections, now 17 months away. Government officials, including Deputy Government Spokesman Giannis Antoniou, have expressed a desire to remain detached from the premature election discourse. Spokesman Konstantinos Letympiotis acknowledged Neophytou’s democratic right to declare his candidacy but questioned the utility of initiating a long campaign while the state remains focused on navigating the complexities of the Cyprus issue and regional diplomatic challenges.
