National guard faces decisions on armored fleet renewal

The Cyprus National Guard is currently evaluating the modernization of its aging tank fleet, which largely consists of older generation vehicles. Despite previous maintenance efforts, these assets have reached a critical stage in their operational life cycle, necessitating a strategic renewal to meet modern combat requirements for protection, fire control, and interoperability. Although a formal decision to acquire new tanks has been pending for years, fiscal and logistical constraints have complicated the procurement process. Potential candidates historically considered include French Leclercs, German Leopards, and Israeli Merkapas.

Simultaneously, a public debate has emerged regarding the management of the AMX-30B2 tank program. Defense analyst Petros Savvidis recently disputed media reports suggesting that acquisition decisions were linked to the career of Deputy Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Neofytos Pachoulidis. Savvidis emphasized that such procurement initiatives are institutional rather than personal, clarifying that the General Staff of the National Guard (GEEF) identifies needs while the Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Armaments and Defense Capability Development manages execution. He characterized allegations linking a four-month tenure extension for the Deputy Chief to specific equipment programs as baseless.
