Cyprus Department of Forests issues guidelines for mushroom picking season

As the wild mushroom season commences in Cyprus, the Department of Forests has issued official guidelines to ensure the protection of the forest ecosystem. The department emphasizes that the use of tools such as rakes, shovels, and combs is strictly prohibited under the Forest Law, as these implements cause significant damage to the soil and fungi populations. Pickers are encouraged to harvest only mushrooms they can confidently identify as edible and are advised to prioritize mature specimens that have already released their spores, thereby ensuring the longevity of the species.

Furthermore, the guidelines stress the importance of preserving the forest floor's layer of leaf litter. Pickers are instructed to move organic material gently only when necessary and to return it to its original position afterward.
