Cyprus authorities issue urgent warning regarding fraudulent Gesy SMS scams

The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) and the Cyprus Police issued a joint warning on September 28, 2026, regarding a persistent wave of fraudulent SMS messages targeting Gesy (General Healthcare System) beneficiaries. These malicious texts, which often use the sender name "GESY" or other healthcare-related terminology, are designed to trick recipients into revealing sensitive information. Authorities noted that these fake messages can appear in the same communication thread as legitimate previous notifications from the HIO, which significantly increases their perceived authenticity.

To prevent identity and financial theft, the HIO explicitly stated that it never requests passwords, login credentials, payment details, or personal data through text messages. Furthermore, the organization does not facilitate financial transactions via external links included in SMS alerts. Beneficiaries are strongly advised to remain vigilant and avoid clicking on any suspicious links or following prompts in such messages. The official guidance from both the HIO and the police is for citizens to delete any such communications immediately to ensure their data remains secure.
