Cyprus Health Insurance Organisation warns against fraudulent SMS messages

On September 28, 2026, the Cyprus Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) and the Cyprus Police issued a joint warning regarding a surge in fraudulent SMS messages targeting beneficiaries of the General Healthcare System (GESY). These deceptive messages use the "GESY" name or other titles mimicking healthcare providers to appear legitimate. In some instances, the malicious texts appear within the same message thread as authentic, previously received notifications from the health system, which may mislead users into believing they are genuine.

The HIO has explicitly stated that it never requests passwords, login credentials, payment details, or personal sensitive information via text message. Furthermore, the organization does not ask citizens to conduct financial transactions through links included in SMS messages. Both the HIO and the police urge the public to remain vigilant and avoid clicking any links contained in suspicious messages.

Beneficiaries are advised to immediately delete any such messages upon receipt. Authorities emphasize that this level of caution is necessary to prevent electronic fraud and protect personal data from malicious actors.
