Greek government denies reports of rerouting for Greece-Cyprus power cable

On September 28, 2026, Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis officially denied recent media reports suggesting that Greece and France had agreed to a minor rerouting of the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection cable. The reports had claimed that a new path was being planned to bypass the 'Fethiye-Kas' maritime park area, which Turkey declared south of Kastellorizo on August 15, 2026, to prevent potential Turkish interference with the project.

Marinakis stated that he has no knowledge of any such redesign and affirmed that the project will proceed based on the initial design specifications, as previously outlined by relevant government ministers. He reiterated that the official government position remains unchanged.

In addition to addressing the cable project, the Greek government categorically rejected a report from the Wall Street Journal. The report had alleged that the U.S. Ambassador to Greece threatened the Greek Minister of Energy regarding the political stability of the current administration. The Greek authorities maintain that these claims of diplomatic pressure are unfounded.
