Municipalities protest against new prison site in Agios Sozomenos

Municipal councils of Latsia-Geri and South Nicosia-Idalio held an informal joint session on Monday to address the government's decision to construct new central prisons in the Agios Sozomenos area. Mayors Christos Pittaras and Stavros Chatzigiannis confirmed that the meeting aimed to unify the official stance of the local authorities following two weeks of individual statements regarding the project.

Local officials highlighted two primary concerns: the perceived unsuitability of the selected land plot and the complete lack of prior consultation by the state. While both mayors emphasized that they do not fundamentally oppose government infrastructure development, they expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency, noting that these concerns were formally communicated to the President of the Republic. The meeting focused on evaluating the environmental and social impacts of the site, marking the formalization of municipal opposition to the current planning process.
