Investigation into the leak of Stavros Dimosthenous's morgue photograph continues

One year after the murder of Stavros Dimosthenous on October 17, 2025, Cypriot authorities are still conducting a disciplinary investigation into the unauthorized leak of a photograph showing the victim’s body at the morgue. The incident was recently discussed by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, which addressed concerns regarding the protection of privacy for crime victims and their families. Despite existing regulations requiring strict confidentiality in handling crime scene evidence, the leak sparked significant public and legislative scrutiny regarding the enforcement of these protocols.

While the Legal Service concluded on May 6, 2026, that the incident did not constitute a criminal offense, a police disciplinary probe remains active. During the parliamentary session, police representative Thomas Hatzikyriakou emphasized that the force possesses the technical capability to trace the handling of digital evidence and identify the source of any unauthorized disclosures. He reiterated that evidence should only be accessed by authorized personnel under strict confidentiality. The committee, prompted by MP Michalis Kounounis, questioned the efficacy of current safeguards, signaling a broader legislative focus on ensuring police accountability and protecting the dignity of victims in future cases.
