Turkish comedian Deniz Goktas released after 88 days in custody

On September 28, 2026, a court in Istanbul ordered the release of 32-year-old Turkish stand-up comedian Deniz Goktas following 88 days of pre-trial detention. Goktas had been arrested on July 2, 2026, upon returning to Turkey from an international tour for his show "Dead Sea" (Ölü Deniz). Initially facing up to 12 years in prison on multiple charges, he was tried at the 14th Criminal Court of Istanbul.

The court sentenced Goktas to 19 months in prison in total—specifically 11 months and 20 days for insulting the President and 7 months and 15 days for insulting religious values. He was acquitted of the charge of "praising a crime and a criminal." During the proceedings, Goktas defended his use of the term "dictator" in his comedy, arguing that it was a political description rather than an insult. Despite the conviction, the court ordered his release pending the outcome of an appeal.

His legal challenges included a prior attempt at release in late August, which was immediately thwarted by a re-arrest related to jokes about a criminal organization known as "Daltonlar." Goktas remains defiant, stating that he will continue to use satire to comment on his experiences. He is currently free until the appeals process concludes.
