Cyprus government evaluates installing CCTV on school buses

On September 28, 2026, the Cypriot government announced plans to explore the installation of CCTV systems in all buses used for student transportation. This initiative, proposed by Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Evie Tsolaki, aims to establish a permanent solution for addressing rising incidents of student misconduct and delinquency during transit. A broad consultation meeting was held featuring key officials, including Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou, House Transport Committee chairman Sotiris Ioannou, Personal Data Commissioner Maria Christofidou, and head of the parents' federation Loizos Constantinou.

The Transport Ministry will cover the costs associated with the project, which involves formalizing tenders and operational specifications in coordination with the Personal Data Commissioner’s guidelines. Minister Tsolaki emphasized that while the long-term goal is the permanent installation of cameras, interim measures will be implemented immediately. These will include the use of escorts and attendants, including parents, on buses to monitor student behavior. In the event of an incident, authorized representatives will provide relevant footage to the police for investigation, ensuring that all privacy regulations are strictly followed.
