Cyprus recognized for established human trafficking referral mechanism

A new report published on Monday by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs confirms that Cyprus has a fully institutionalized National Referral Mechanism for victims of human trafficking. The mechanism is supported by a comprehensive framework of both legislative and administrative acts. Furthermore, Cyprus is identified as one of only eight European Union member states to maintain a clearly defined national contact point for cross-border victim referrals.

Currently, the Cypriot government is undergoing a revision of its national legal and procedural framework regarding human trafficking. This initiative aims to improve several key areas, specifically the early identification of victims, the clarification of responsibilities among relevant stakeholders, and enhanced protections for children. Additionally, the process involves updating national guidelines and strengthening cooperation between government agencies. The primary entities responsible for facilitating these cross-border efforts are the Police Anti-Trafficking Unit and the Deputy Ministry of Migration.
