Cyprus national team faces Armenia in UEFA Nations League match at GSP stadium
The Cyprus national football team hosted Armenia at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia on October 2, 2026, for the third round of the UEFA Nations League, Group B of League C. Coming off a 1-2 loss to Montenegro and a 0-0 draw against Latvia, Cyprus sought its first victory to improve its standings. Coach Akis Mantzios made significant changes to the squad, which featured Leonidas Konomis, who scored the opening goal in the 19th minute following a mistake by Armenian goalkeeper Beglarian.
Prior to the match, the team faced personnel challenges due to suspensions of Sotiriou and Tsaroullas, as well as injuries to Laifis and Sielis. Despite calls from the coaching staff and the Cyprus Football Association for public support, the stadium saw disappointing attendance, with three-quarters of the 20,000-capacity venue remaining empty. The match was officiated by Finnish referee Mohammed Al-Emara. A win for Cyprus is considered crucial for maintaining prospects of qualifying for the next stage and surpassing Armenia in the group table, as the team remains under pressure to convert opportunities into consistent points.
