DISY internal processes triggered by presidential candidacy announcements

On September 27, 2026, former Democratic Rally (DISY) leader Averof Neofytou announced his intention to run in the 2028 presidential elections, citing stagnation in the Cyprus issue. This move triggered an immediate reaction from current DISY president Annita Demetriou, who announced on September 28 that she would also seek the party's nomination to ensure the party remains a central player in the upcoming race.

Following these developments, the DISY Executive Office met on September 29 to finalize procedures for selecting a candidate. For the first time in the party's history, the selection will be decided by the entire party membership. The Executive Office proposed that formal candidacies be submitted on October 13, with an extraordinary national electoral assembly scheduled for November 14, 2026.
