Trial of suspended Paphos mayor continues in Paphos Criminal Court

The trial of the suspended mayor of Paphos, Faidonas Faidonos, continues before the Permanent Criminal Court of Paphos. The legal proceedings are being held behind closed doors following a successful request by the prosecution. To date, more than 15 prosecution witnesses, including police investigators, expert witnesses, and colleagues of the complainant, have testified and faced cross-examination.

Faidonos faces five serious criminal charges, including rape, indecent assault on a woman with an additional act, indecent assault, actual bodily harm, and the administration of a substance capable of sedating or neutralizing a person's power of resistance. The defendant has pleaded not guilty to all charges. There are fewer than five prosecution witnesses remaining to be called.

Once the prosecution completes its witness list, the court is expected to rule on whether a prima facie case exists. A highly anticipated component of the trial is the testimony of the complainant, which is expected to be delivered via video conference from a separate room within the courthouse in the near future. The trial began in late July 2026, and legal proceedings are ongoing.
