Trial of suspended Paphos mayor Phaedon Phaedonos continues

The trial of the suspended mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phaedonos, currently taking place at the Paphos Criminal Court, was postponed on September 29, 2026, due to the illness of a prosecution witness. The judicial proceedings, which have been ongoing since late July, are being conducted behind closed doors at the request of the prosecution. More than 15 witnesses have already testified, including police investigators and experts, while fewer than five remain to be called.

Mayor Phaedonos faces five serious charges, including rape, indecent assault on a woman with an additional act, indecent assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and the administration of drugs or substances to incapacitate a person. The defendant has pleaded not guilty to all counts. Once the prosecution completes its witness list, the court will deliberate on whether there is a prima facie case against the accused.

The complainant in the case is expected to provide her testimony via video link at a later date, though she has not yet appeared before the court. The proceedings are scheduled to resume on October 6, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., where the court will continue hearing the remaining prosecution witnesses followed by cross-examination by defense attorneys Christos Pourgouridis and Nontas Korakidis.
