Cornell University sexual assault investigation reopened

Authorities in New York have announced the reopening of an investigation into a 2024 sexual assault at Cornell University. The decision follows a civil lawsuit filed earlier this month by a female student, identified as Jane Doe, who alleges she was drugged and gang-raped for several hours at a Chi Phi fraternity house. The student further claims that the perpetrators exchanged messages during the assault indicating that she was available for sex.

Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten confirmed he has initiated a review regarding the potential for criminal charges against seven fraternity members involved in the incident. Van Houten stated that his office has begun consultations with the complainant and her legal representatives. If sufficient evidence is found to support criminal charges, the case will be presented before a Tompkins County grand jury to determine the next steps in the legal proceedings.
