Recent judicial rulings on major drug trafficking cases in Cyprus

Cypriot courts have recently handed down significant sentences in two separate drug trafficking cases. In the first instance, the Court of Appeal upheld an eight-year prison sentence for a man involved in the distribution of cannabis in Limassol. This investigation, which began on May 11, 2021, followed police reports regarding drug activity in Kato Polemidia and areas between Vouni and Lofou.

In a separate ruling, the Paphos Criminal Court sentenced a 56-year-old man to 17 years in prison for the possession and supply of controlled substances. On February 19, 2025, authorities apprehended the suspect in Paphos after observing him digging in an open field. Subsequent searches uncovered 37.45 kilograms of cannabis, with approximately one kilogram found in the man's possession and the remainder discovered inside a water tank buried in the ground. Both cases represent intensified efforts by the Anti-Narcotics Service (YKAN) to combat large-scale drug trafficking across the island.
