Nicosia and Limassol mayors propose tram systems for public transport upgrade

The mayors of Nicosia and Limassol, Charalambos Prountzos and Yiannis Armeftis, have jointly requested the assistance of the Transport Ministry to explore the implementation of a tram network in both cities. This marks the first time such an initiative has been proposed by both municipalities in coordination, aimed at establishing fixed-track public transport to revitalize urban mobility.

While the Transport Ministry currently appears opposed to the proposal, citing departmental concerns that the European Investment Bank would likely withhold funding due to low existing bus ridership, the mayors intend to push for an updated feasibility study. Mayor Prountzos argues that current bus systems have failed to attract sufficient passengers over the past 17 years and that the 2030 expiration of the Nicosia bus contract makes this an ideal time for a transition. The proposed analysis aims to look beyond simple construction and maintenance costs, factoring in environmental benefits and the reduction of carbon emissions costs for Cyprus. Future progress remains uncertain as the mayors continue to advocate for a comprehensive evaluation of the project.
